Pure iron is a very soft metal with a silvery-white metallic luster. It cannot be used to make weapons or cast iron pots, plows, or hoes. However, when pure iron contains a certain amount of carbon, it becomes the steel we use in various applications. When the carbon content in pure iron exceeds 0.02%, it transforms into low-carbon steel, which has relatively low hardness and is used for drawing iron wires and rolling thin tinplates. Steel with a carbon content ranging from 0.25% to 0.6% is called medium-carbon steel, which has moderate hardness and can be rolled into construction steel, steel plates, nails, and other products. When the carbon content in iron reaches 0.6% to 2.0%, it becomes high-carbon steel, which is very hard. Low-carbon, medium-carbon, and high-carbon steels together are referred to as "carbon steel." If the carbon content in iron exceeds 2.0%, it becomes cast iron, which is hard and brittle and used for casting iron pots, radiators, plows, etc. Generally, cast iron has a carbon content of 3.5%–5.5%. Therefore, the main difference between pure iron, steel, and cast iron lies in the carbon content. Industrial pure iron is a type of steel. Its chemical composition is primarily iron, with a content of 99.50%–99.90%, and a carbon content below 0.04%. The fewer other elements, the better. Since it is not truly pure iron, this type of steel, which is close to pure iron, is called industrial pure iron. Generally, industrial pure iron is exceptionally soft, highly ductile, and has excellent electromagnetic properties. There are two common specifications: one is used as deep-drawing material, capable of being pressed into extremely complex shapes; the other is used as electromagnetic material, with high magnetic permeability and low coercivity, widely applied in electronic and electrical engineering, electrical components, magnetic materials, amorphous products, relays, sensors, automotive brakes, textile machinery, electric meters, solenoid valves, and other products. Its melting point is higher than that of iron, it rusts less easily than iron in humid air, and it can passivate in cold concentrated sulfuric acid.
